If I could marry Instagram I would! That’s how obsessed I am with the platform. For 2 years, I have been using it to build an audience, drive traffic back to my site, attract my most favorite clients. It has built my business in ways I never even imagined.
I started using Instagram when it first started a couple years ago. I used it as a personal platform to connect with my friends and family. When I saw the power of where it could take my business, I began trying to figure out how to use it to connect with an audience that I so desired. When I started gaining momentum on Instagram, then I utilized what I used there into other parts of my business and other social media platforms. My business skyrocketed and it was AMAZING and a little scary. I am still completely blown away by its beautiful power.
To show you exactly why it’s AMAZING, I’ve created a list of 25 ways Instagram is the shiz!
1. GET DIRECT INSIGHT INTO YOUR COMMUNITY
The insight you get is what your audience likes, what they don’t, what inspires them, what they want more of. If you want feedback on what would help audience most – you can just ask them! How cool is that?
2. CREATIVE VISUAL CONTENT
It allows you to get super creative with your visual content (which in my opinion is the BEST type of content). You’re the boss and you can create whatever you want.
3. MEET BUSINESS BESTIES
This may be one of my favorite parts of instagram. Yea it might seem a little like stranger danger, but I’ve met up with some incredible, like-minded biz babes that have become some of my truly good friends. It makes my heart dance when I get to talk shop with other business owners and bloggers. Reach out to someone!
4. NO OVERFLOW OF ADS
It’s not super overflowed with ads (although they are some, it’s way less than facebook). This means you have a space where people are necessarily open to being sold to so you can get creative on how to connect with your potential customers. I think this creates a more authentic space to grow your business.
5. AUDIENCE RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT
When someone follows you, you pretty much get an invitation into their feed (also into their day) so day by day you are building a relationship with them.
6. MAJOR INSPIRATION
Instagram is all about inspiration. That’s pretty much the nature of visual content. This means you can both inspire and be inspired! #winning
7. IT VERSATILE FOR SO MANY BUSINESSES
It amazes me that there’s a place for almost any type of business on Instagram. It’s a place of so much community and no matter what business model or audience you have, there’s a pretty good chance an audience for that is on Instagram. I didn’t know so many like-minded people existed until I dove into Instagram. It was such an amazing feeling!
8. CAPABILITY TO LET YOUR SKILLS SHINE
Yes, you don’t have to post 100 flat lays because everyone else is doing it. You’re able to truly let your skills shine and find a following that will totally dig it. If you’re a musician it doesn’t make much sense to be posting tons of photos. You should be sharing your music via videos!
9. IT MOVES SUPER FAST
Hey, when you are first starting out trying to figure out your style, voice, and who the heck your audience is, you will probably post weird photos, bad captions…. BUT instagram moves so fast that you are able to make mistakes and move on quickly. A week later, no one will even remember that you posted that embarrassing photo.
10. IT’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE
Remember myspace, flickr, or friendster? They seemed like the next biggest thing, right? They grew just as fast as they declined. Facebook has stuck through the rise and fall of other social media platforms and Facebook owns Instagram so they are in for the long haul. Instagram is simple, focused, and not going anywhere! Building an audience there is an extremely good investment.
11. ONE PHOTO AT TIME = BIGGER IMPACT
This is my favorite part about Instagram (do I keep saying that?). But really, think about how many images we see every day. Ahh probably 1 million, right? When we just see one image as opposed to a group of photos, there is bigger impact upon our audience. I’m a fan of simplicity and so are our brains and the way we take in information.
12. WE DON’T HAVE TO SHARE NOVELS
No one wants to read novels on Instagram because it’s all about the visual content so that means that 1. we don’t have to spend time writing novels to connect with our audience and 2. it forces us to give our captions and fewer words more power. We can save all the writing for our blog posts, newsletters, etc. #timesaved
13. QUICK CREATIVE ENERGY
Yes, sometimes photos take some time, but the instant nature of instagram allows us to quickly upload our creative masterpieces and get our audience to respond right there!
14. GRANT ACCESS TO THE INSIDES OF YOUR BUSINESS
You know that “like, know, and trust” factor everyone is talking about? In order for you to build trust enough for a follower to become a customer means they need to know you on a human level. Instagram is such an incredible tool for that. There’s something intimate about showing people snapshots of your daily life as a business owner. And Jessica Zollman, the community manager of Instagram, states this perfectly – “Instagram can be a window to places and things you don’t normally get to see.”
15. ABILITY TO DISPLAY YOUR WHY FACTOR
This goes with reason #14. When we are showing a snapshot of our everyday life, we are usually showing insight into why we do what we do as entrepreneurs. Whether you run your business to be able to spend more time with your family or to be able to serve your audience in the way they need you the most. Your audience is able to get to know you on a more intimate level through instagram and are able to see why you do what you do. People make buying decisions on emotions and if you can connect with your audience emotionally then you can make a bigger impact via your products and services.
16. YOU CAN USE IT FOR GOOD
There’s been a little controversy that Instagram can have a negative impact on our lives (like how a major social media influencer just quit social media last week), but ultimately power is in our hands – whether we use social media for good or let it negatively impact us and others around us. One of my favorite instagram accounts to follow is Rachel Brathen of @yoga_girl and she did a TED talk on using social media to make a positive impact on our world. Watch it here!
