Words cannot even describe how obsessed I am with this tiny, little app that lives on my phone called INSTAGRAM! It has shaped my business in ways I never even imagined. If your ideal client is on Instagram and you enjoy being there, then this post is for YOU, my friend!
Setting up your Instagram profile might seem like an easy task, but it’s the most important part of the whole Instagram game! It’s the first thing people see aka the deciding factor if they want to follow you or not. It’s short and sometimes overlooked, but it is the skeleton of your whole INSTA presence. It shows your audience what you’re about before your actual photos do their part in telling your brand’s story.
Now that I have you convinced that laying down a good foundation for your profile is ESSENTIAL, I am going to show you 3 easy ways to use your Instagram profile to make the BEST first impression on your audience.
1. CRAFT A INTENTIONAL BIO
You can think of your bio as the core of your Instagram profile. It’s important that these couple sentences have tons of purpose and intention while keeping it short and sweet. What a fun balancing act, right?
If you add more than 3 lines to your bio then your actual feed of photos gets pushed down further. You don’t want to have to make someone scroll down to see your content. Nobody’s got time for that, friend! Even though phones are getting larger and larger, you still need to keep it short – anything more than 3 lines cuts off the important stuff. So keep in mind that less is better here.
Make sure you are stating what you do in the 1st line! If I come to your profile I should know exactly what you do in 2 seconds. If you are a photographer, dog sitter, health coach, trapeze expert – let me know right away!
Are you sensing a theme here? It usually takes 10 seconds for visitors to make a decision if they are going to stay or leave your website… and that’s just your website! I’m guessing it’s much quicker with Instagram. Don’t make people go on a treasure hunt to figure out what you do and to see your content.
In regards to the copy, make sure it aligns with the rest of the copy you use in your blog posts or on your website. If you write in a casual fun voice, make sure you come across that way in your bio. I’m pretty fluent in emoji and use emojis in all of my Instagram captions, in my newsletters, and on website, so my bio has emojis 🙂
2. PERSONAL PHOTO VS. YOUR LOGO
Using a personal photo or your brand’s logo dictates what kind of account you have. We can break down Instagram business accounts into 2 separate, equally awesome, categories. You either share content as the individual behind your business or you share content collectively as your brand. My account @jessicasafko shares content as myself, not as my brand – love plus color. I don’t share content as a collective if it were to be purely my brand’s account.
If you’d like to see a perfect example of these two accounts look at @shopbando and @jengotch. @shopbando is a perfect example of how an account shares their brand content and @jengotch (who is the biz owner behind @shopbando) shares her content. PS – Jen’s account is HILARIOUS and she’s one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram 🙂
I’m not telling you two run two different accounts. It’s best to choose one way or the other to share your content. If you decide to run your account as an individual it doesn’t mean you’re sharing only personal content. I still share content mostly about my business, but I do it from my perspective instead of my business as a whole.
Now that we have that covered, let’s talk about the logistics of your profile picture. Instagram automatically crops your profile photo as a circle so make sure that you account for this. You don’t want your pretty face cut off. You also want your logo to legible. If you need to make a separate logo variation to look great in this space – go for it! Get creative!
3. LINK OR LANDING PAGE
Building a following and having a large engagement on Instagram is awesome, but the whole purpose of using Instagram for your business is to drive traffic back to your site or blog, of course! So you MUST include a link to your website or create a unique landing page exclusively for your Instagram followers.
FOR YOUR BIZ NEWBIES – If you don’t have a website yet – GET ONE! At the very least, create a one-pager where you can let people know more about you. I HIGHLY suggest Squarespace if you aren’t tech inclined 🙂
FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE READY FOR THE NEXT LEVEL – Since there is no way to track traffic from Instagram, there is a little work around. You can create a unique landing page to share exclusively in your Instagram profile to track exactly how much traffic you are getting from Instagram. You can create a unique landing page or duplicate a page with a unique link. BUT make sure you aren’t sharing this link anywhere else so you can track this traffic from Instagram only.
BAM! and just like that – you’re now an Instagram superstar 🙂 Here’s a little cheat sheet for you and make sure you keep scrolling for my big announcement!
