Instagram is an incredibly powerful tool to create deeper community for your business or blog. When I talk about authentic engagement and community, I’m not talking about obsessively noting how many comments and likes you get on Instagram. Taking note of that is no fun and definitely not what this post is about.
Because let’s be real, your value does not and never will equal how many followers, comments, or likes you are getting. Especially if you are just starting out, there’s a time for discovery. If you continue to commit to it, your brand will stand out and you’ll be able to increase your engagement organically in no time!
When I talk about engagement and community, I’m talking about using Instagram to really get to know your audience. Community and engagement is about going beyond the comments + stats and into connecting with your audience. Being there to serve them with your genius and expertise. Because I know you have a lot of that!
Instagram can be a place to find out exact questions your audience has been having so you can turn around and create content upon that. It also allows you to be able to support other business owners and meet new like-minded people. You can use this wonderful social media platform to attract an audience. From there, you can create the fabulous opportunity of turning that audience into customers. It’s pretty magical stuff, right?!
So here’s the real deal – you can google this and I’m sure there are tons of articles about hashtagging and how you should hashtag the heck out of your posts… But what about doing away with that and focusing on really, really intentional, fabulous and focused content? Hashtags won’t get you the targeted audience you are looking for. Creating bomb ass content will though!
I’m really giddy at the chance to share with you some really awesome ways you can create real engagement on Instagram. Talking about Instagram gets me really excited so you can imagine if I was telling you this in person I would be talking really fast with some hyper excitement ?!
Here’s some ways you can start creating community-focused content and conquer Instagram like lady boss that you are. Plus, I’ve created a 5 day FREE challenge you can join here to get deeper with me on all things Instagram. It’s a video and email lesson challenge and it all starts March 10th!
CREATE INTENTIONAL ENGAGING CONTENT
Putting intention behind your content is sure to take it to the next level. Ask questions, tell your followers to participate, and share insights that provoke your followers to comment and feedback. And please, please be genuine when you are starting the conversation in your content. It can help if asking yourself this before you post – are you genuinely interested in starting this conversation or are you merely sharing to get more comments? Put some authentic purpose behind it. This is how you truly build a genuine connection with your audience. Think of them more than just followers and really care about what’s going on in their world. This makes all the difference.
When you are first starting to build an audience on Instagram I know it can feel like you’re talking to a ghost town, but DON’T GIVE UP! Don’t be discouraged if you ask a question and no one answers. Keep asking questions, keep creating that type of content because the engagement will come if you keep committing.
And I want to be really honest with you to make things a little easier on you. Not every Instagram post has to be intentional for engagement, sometimes a simple “Happy Friday!” post is just what your busy audience needs for you to stay relevant in their minds. It’s best to balance out the deeper, longer, thought-provoking posts with simplicity. It doesn’t have to be so complicated all of the time.
If you want to know more about this I cover tons of juicy tricks to creating content with intention in my FREE INSTA overhaul challenge so be sure to get in on that action.
CREATE SPACE FOR INSTAGRAM ENGAGEMENT
This may sound a little silly, but I want to share a really helpful rule I’ve kept for myself (even when I had 100 followers). Once you post your brilliant content on Instagram, make sure you stick around for at least 15ish minutes.
This creates space or future space for you to be able to quickly respond to your comments. The most awesome thing about Instagram is sharing quick content (kind of like micro-blogging) and people want to know they can reach you. Unless your Beyonce, of course ?!
So maybe you never get any engagement on your posts because you’re just starting out in the Instagram world. That’s totally fine, we all start somewhere… BUT make sure you are sticking to this and committing to be there for your audience.
You’ll get so used to it that when your comments start flooding in you’ll be used to setting time to be there and serve your audience. Trust me, if you commit it can/will happen!
CREATE YOUR OWN BRAND HASHTAG
This is a great way to connect with your audience + be able to see what others are creating in your community in a relevant nature to your brand. It’s a way you can invite your audience to collaborate with you. You can encourage your followers to post upon your hashtag by saying “Post on #______ for a chance to get featured!” This makes it super fun and you can always post their content (but always, always credit them) to spread the love.
It makes me so happy to look at my hashtag #lovepluscolor. It’s filled with such beautiful, color, positive vibes I could eat it all up every day, all day. I highly, highly encourage you to create your own hashtag so you can create this type of visual archive for your brand as well. Mine is clearly my business’ name, but yours doesn’t have to be. You can make it as obvious or creative as you want.
Make sure you look up this hashtag before you start posting on it because it may already be taken and super active. That would be a bummer so make sure you do your quick and thorough research because you set one in stone.
And I hope to see you in FREE INSTA challenge so we can get deeper on overhauling your Instagram presence, content, and style! YAY! Sign up below to join the part-ay!
