Hey girl, we’ve all been there! As creative entrepreneurs, it can sometimes be a challenge to have to be able to turn on your creative switch whenever you have to complete a project, meet a deadline, or launch new products. Of course, the rewards are far worth it, but every now and then we need a little inspiring pick-me-up, right?!
Feeling uninspired is never fun and I’m sure if you could control it you would. I think I’ve been there so many times that I could write a step-by-step approach on how to get out of an uninspiring slump. But you’re in luck because that’s what I’m doing right now. Yay!
The vital part of getting out of this is staying compassionate to yourself. I am going to give you a couple ways to prevent these unplanned and uninspiring times, but don’t try too hard force yourself out of something. Your emotions may be trying to show you something really important.
PLAN AHEAD DEPENDING ON YOUR ENERGY LEVELS.
Your work day is almost over and you glance over at your to-do list… OMG! You have the 3 most important, energy involving tasks left.. AH! What are you going to do? First let’s back track and strive to not put yourself in this kind of situation again. I say strive because I understand sometimes you get caught up in something that lasts all day. Nobody is perfect, but you can learn how to take more control over your day.
I want you to really evaluate your energy levels throughout the day. When do you feel most creative and inspired? Is it in the morning or are you a night owl? For me, I have most of my creative output after a large cup of coffee in the morning and sometimes at night in random spurts (honestly, sometimes after a glass of wine.)
Try to monitor these times, even journal and take note of it. Once you are aware of when you are at your creative peak, plan your day around that. I like to write blog posts near the end of the day so I can wind down, put on music and write a post or two. This is the time my heart can really be in creating this kind of written content. In the morning, I am all about the visuals. I take my Instagram photos and do my client design work then. I plan all of my tasks around my writing and visual peaks.
CHANGE YOUR SURROUNDINGS!
This is my favorite one when I am feeling creatively stuck. When I first started doing design work, I thought the more I worked on something and sat in front of it, the more inspired I would become. Yikes.. I couldn’t have been more wrong with this one! You always need a break and fresh new surroundings. It gives your brain a rest from the task, so when you come back you can be more efficient.
If you are starting to feel anxious, uninspired or tired – go for a walk, have a dance break, or call a friend. Do whatever you can do that’s fun and different than the task you are trying to complete. Fortunately, it helps to have a little pup who needs potty breaks throughout the day. #apartmentliving
Changing my surroundings is part of my everyday routine. I even plan for it in my daily life and client deadlines. For example if I have logos to do for a client, I plan and account for the time I need away from the project to be able to be fully inspired and creative to meet my deadline and deliver the best product that I can. This has been a major game changer in my productivity.
SHOW YOURSELF SOME LOVE!
This is the most important, yet hardest thing to do sometimes. When we have deadlines and important things that need to get done we tend to put the project above our self-care. Remember that you need to be the best version of yourself in order to serve your personal and business relationships.
When you haven’t been taking care of yourself, you are not allowing any space to feel inspired. If you are constantly feeling stuck, reevaluate your timing and priorities and make sure you are putting YOU high up on that list. Self-care and love is different for everyone, so make sure you find out what gives you rest and makes you feel happy. You can go for a walk, call a friend, meditate, do yoga, meet a friend for drinks, take a bath, paint, dance, sing…see the list can go on and on.
MOVE YOUR BODY
I’m sure you are aware that sitting at your desk all day isn’t the healthiest thing for you. Not only physically, but for your creative juices too. Moving your body gets your energy flowing. It’s up to you if you do a hardcore workout or just a walk around your neighborhood. Moving your body at least 30 minutes daily is so important to staying inspired and getting unstuck.
If you have the flexibility to workout mid-day, then use that opportunity. One of my friends told me that she plans to go to yoga everyday at 12pm so we she can take a break mid-day and stay committed to it. What an amazing idea, right?
All of these steps to move past your creative block are for planning ahead. Putting yourself in positions to be most inspired. I feel like a slight change in your day can make all the difference. After all is said and done, don’t be too hard on yourself. Be kind and compassionate to your needs when you are feeling uninspired. You may really need a break.. so take one… NOW!
